Diagnostics, Therapeutics & Vaccine

The pathogenesis of COVID-19 is a relatively unique process when compared to other infectious lung diseases, such as influenza. Based on a set of observations, it is thought that the severity of COVID-19 is sustained by the overlap of two pathogenic processes: i) an unregulated inflammatory and immune response and ii) the disruption of the renin-angiotensine system (SARS) responsible for the regulation of blood pressure, fluids and electrolites. It is probably due to this double pathological process that severe COVID-19 is characterized, not only by dysregulation of lung function, but also by circulatory, cardiac and renal function. In this topic, we will present science digests that focus on studies related to the development of therapies and vaccines that will be needed to either eradicate the SARS-Cov-2 virus or to limit the severity of COVID-19.
